Although not mandated by Halacha, Tashlich is a ritual which has a long and valued history as a matter of Minhag - custom.

The Tashlich service itself is relatively short and provides an opportunity for the Jewish community to gather by the side of a river, stream, or lake and empty our pockets (pre-loaded, perhaps) of breadcrumbs into the water. As the Cantor explains, these are stand-ins for our ‘sins’ during the previous year. The water, which must be ‘living’, i.e. moving, will carry these virtual sins away and help us to a fresh start during the new year of  5772.

While this is an annual Congregation B’nai Jacob initiative, this year Temple Beth El of Jersey City will be joining our traditional Tashlich. Cantor Marsha Dubrow and Rabbi Hachen will conduct the joint service, and we warmly invite all Jersey City Jews of all levels of observance and knowledge to join in and bring this year’s Tashlich to a higher level of meaning and value for the entire Jewish community of Jersey City.

If you have kids (or grandkids, or nieces, nephews, or neighbors), bring them along. They’ll have a great time throwing breadcrumbs into the Hudson and not being scolded, for a change.

We’ll have apples and honey for everyone, plus handouts with the short, inclusive service..

This year’s Tashlich will be held the first day of Rosh Hashana, Thursday, September 29th, at 2:00 PM.

We’ll all meet at the foot of Washington Street in Jersey City. We’re going to try our best to start on time and finish within the hour. So, be a little early if you can.

If you’re driving, come early to find a space. The Light Rail has a stop nearby, so take public transportation, if necessary.
